Hey there. Thank you for your question. As a real world Witch who studied under a Voodoo High Priest, it would be my pleasure to define some terms for you.
Let’s start with Voodoo.
What is Voodoo?
Voodoo is the primary religion of Haiti, and practiced by millions of people all over the world.
Anyone who tells you that Voodoo doesn’t exist, is an idiot. It totally exists. But it’s VERY different to all that dancing and chanting and chicken slaughtering that you sometimes see in movies.
For a little while I lived in Haiti and studied under a Voodoo High Priest. Much of his work - which looked a LOT like ‘spell casting” - was involved with healing, whether that involved physical healing, or emotional, or mental, or spiritual.
Every now and then he would remove a curse, but most of the time the work was quite mundane.
Witchcraft isn’t all that different.
What is Witchcraft?
Witchcraft is a term that encompasses a number of disciplines and skills, be that the creation of potions or medicines, fortune telling, or spell casting.
Back in the day, the ‘woman in the woods’ was the local doctor, and therapist. People went to her, and she healed them.
Then along came the Church, and they put an end to all that. People were told that Witches weren’t be trusted. They rounded up anyone who sympathised with witchcraft, and had them executed. In the name of Jesus. Remember that the next time you’re singing a hymn about love for your fellow man.
What is Wicca?
Wicca is actually a modern pagan religion. It's only a few decades old.
People confuse Wicca and Witchcraft. Whilst there's some crossover the two are very different.
For instance, I am NOT a Wiccan, but I AM a Witch.
What is Magic?
Ah. Now you're asking...
Magick (correctly spelt with a K) is a fairly broad term. I like to think of it as ‘undiscovered science’. The practice of using natural processes (which are yet to be explained) to create an outcome. With magick it is possible to cure illnesses, mend a broken heart, bring back an ex-lover, find a new-lover, increase one’s wealth, help the body lose excess weight, banish anxiety, and punish the unpunished.
Is magick real? Here's a blog post about that.
I hope this has gone some way to answering your question. You will find lots of other answers I have given on similar subjects on my blog.
Blessed be
Raven
